BREAKING: AKA’s bodyguard who was there when he was kiIIed has been arrested

Kiernan ‘AKA’s Forbes long-time bodyguard, Anwar Khan, found himself entangled in legal troubles as he was among 15 individuals arrested in connection with alleged fraud and corruption at the University of Fort Hare.

The arrests, made over the Easter weekend, culminated in a court appearance at the Dimbaza Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.

Initially, the police had indicated a broad spectrum of charges including fraud, corruption, kidnapping, murder, and attempted murder. However, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) clarified that all 15 suspects faced charges of fraud, racketeering, and corruption.

This development is part of a larger investigation into criminal activities at the University of Fort Hare, with a total of 25 individuals arrested, some of whom are facing serious charges like murder and attempted murder.

The university has been marred by violence in recent times, including the murder of Fort Hare fleet manager Peet Roets in May 2022, and the fatal shooting of bodyguard Mboneli Vesele outside the residence of the university’s vice-chancellor in January 2023. Reports suggested that substantial sums were allegedly offered as bounties for these killings, indicating a deeper level of criminal involvement.

Among the arrested individuals are taxi industry figures from KwaZulu-Natal and a 31-year-old Eastern Cape police constable, Lindokuhle Manjati.

The national police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, emphasized the commitment of law enforcement to uncovering the truth behind these crimes and bringing the perpetrators to justice. He assured that the investigation would be thorough, aiming to present a robust case supported by compelling evidence.

The matter has been adjourned until Wednesday for a formal bail application, with all 15 accused remaining in custody. The accused include Isaac Plaatjies, Anna Smith, Paul Tladi, Lucrecia Davids, Mbulelo Gingcana, Loius Mawila, Nozuko Mabombo, Gosain van der Haar, Thamsanqa Sonjica, Terrence Joubert, Bradley Conradie, Sarah Burger, Craig Retief, and Nthabiseng Makhoba.

Anwar Khan, the proprietor of The Pentagon Group, a private security agency based in KZN, has been a prominent figure in AKA’s security detail for years. Khan previously attended the bail application hearings of suspects arrested in connection with AKA’s murder in Durban Florida Road in February 2023.

In an interview with IOL, Khan expressed his belief that the true mastermind behind AKA’s death remained at large, adding another layer of intrigue to an already complex and tragic series of events.
