Skeem Saam’ actress Amanda Manku: ‘I died’

‘Skeem Saam’ Actress Amanda Manku Opens Up About the Murder of Her Mother and Grandmother

Renowned actress Amanda Manku, who portrays Dr. Elizabeth Thobakgale-Seakamela on Skeem Saam, has spoken out about the tragic deaths of her mother and grandmother, revealing the deep emotional impact it has had on her life.

In a raw and candid interview on the Mommy Diaries Podcast, Amanda shared how the tragedy unfolded and the profound grief she continues to endure.

Manku disclosed that the murders, which occurred in 2021, left her devastated. She reflected on how she initially thought she could handle the loss but later realized the extent of her pain. “I did not deal with it; I died. I think the day that they passed away was the day that something died within me,” she said, giving insight into the emotional toll it has taken on her.

Amanda’s connection with her mother was especially unique, as her mother had given birth to her at just 15 years old. “My mom had me when she was 15, so she was my friend, and my grandmother automatically became my mother,” she said. The loss of both women, whom Amanda described as the “centre” of her life, left her grappling with anger, especially towards God, due to the violent nature of their deaths.

The tragedy struck on May 4, 2021, when her mother (45) and grandmother (70) were brutally shot while fetching water in Makgophong Village, Zebediela. The incident also left her uncle injured. What has made the situation even more heartbreaking is that Amanda’s father, once her “best friend,” is now one of the suspects in the murders. She described him as her pillar of strength before the tragedy, making the loss and betrayal all the more painful.

On January 10, 2024, Amanda’s father, William Manku, along with two other suspects, appeared in court, facing charges related to the murders. The legal proceedings, which have attracted significant media attention, reflect the public’s sympathy and concern for Amanda as she seeks justice for her family. Her father remains in custody, while charges against his alleged girlfriend, Sgt. Nonhlanhla Ngubo, were withdrawn earlier this year.

Despite the immense grief and emotional turmoil, Amanda continues to navigate through this difficult period with the support of her fans and community, who have rallied behind her. Her journey is a reminder of the fragility of life and the resilience needed to endure such unimaginable tragedy.
