The City, in partnership with the Gauteng Province, is committed to providing government-subsidized housing, also known as RDP houses. To date, they’ve delivered over 29,000 housing units and 17,000 serviced stands—and you could be next!
📋 Eligibility for an RDP House
To qualify for the National Housing Subsidy Scheme, you must meet these criteria:
- 🇿🇦 Citizenship: Be a South African citizen with a valid ID
- 👶 Age: Over 21 and mentally competent to sign a contract
- 👨👩👧 Family Status:
- Married or living with a partner, OR
- Single with dependents (single military veterans or elderly without dependents also qualify)
- 💰 Income: Household income must be less than R3,500 per month (combined income of all earners)
- 🏦 Subsidy Status: First-time government subsidy recipient
- 🏠 Ownership: First-time homeowner

- Gather Your Documents:
- Applicant and spouse’s identity documents (green book or ID card)
- Certified copies of children’s birth certificates
- Proof of income (e.g., payslip, if working)
- Visit a Customer Care Centre: Take your documents to your nearest centre.
- Complete the Application: Fill out the housing subsidy application form.
- Join the Waiting List: You’ll be registered on the Municipal Housing Demands Database.
- Wait for Allocation: Once a housing development is ready and you’re next on the list, you’ll receive your keys and title deed—but this can take years.
⚠️ Important Rules for RDP Houses
- 🚫 No Selling: It’s illegal to sell your RDP house within the first 8 years of ownership.
- 🚫 No Renting: Renting out your RDP house is not allowed.
- 🏗️ Renovations: You must get City permission to extend or renovate within the first 8 years.
