About the award: 

The Rhodes Trust Scholarships are a postgraduate scholarship program that helps deserving students from all around the world study at Oxford University.

More than 90 Rhodes Scholars chosen from 20 Rhodes constituencies (64 nations) worldwide receive the Rhodes Trust Scholarships each year to pursue postgraduate degrees at Oxford University. They are exceptional young people with a variety of backgrounds and interests who have the potential to become civic-minded leaders for the future of the planet.

Rhodes Selection Criteria: 

Young people from 20 Rhodes constituencies (64 nations) throughout the world who exhibit exceptional intelligence, character, leadership, and dedication to service are sought after by the Rhodes Selection Committees.

The following four factors determine who is chosen as a Rhodes Scholar:

• The drive to use one’s talents to the fullest (as evidenced by proficiency in activities like sports, music, debate, dance, theater, and artistic endeavors, especially where teamwork is required);

• The truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindness, unselfishness, and fellowship; and

• Moral strength of character, leadership instincts, and a concern for other people.

Who is qualified to apply? The following eligibility criteria apply to all applicants for the Rhodes Scholarships:

Citizenship & Residency You must meet the citizenship/residency requirements of one of the Rhodes Africa constituencies:
  • Kenya
  • Southern Africa (including South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, and Swaziland)
  • West Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, the island of Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Principe, and Togo)
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe
Age On October 1 of the year of application, the candidate must be at least 18 years old and not older than 24. Depending on the environment in each constituency, there are various differences in the maximum age. Before applying, please carefully review the minimum age requirements for your constituency. The October after the selection procedure, the chosen applicants will come to Oxford. Deferring the Scholarship is not permitted.
Education Before attending Oxford, Rhodes Scholars are required to have earned a Bachelor’s degree at a level that satisfies both the Rhodes and the Oxford requirements.   • These nations’ scholarships are managed by a regional secretariat with headquarters in Johannesburg. There are:
  • four Scholarships every year for applicants from South Africa-at-Large,
  • one for applicants from KwaZulu-Natal,
  • one for an applicant from one of: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and eSwatini, and
  • one each for applicants of or from Diocesan College, Rondebosch; South African College School, Newlands; Paul Roos Gymnasium, Stellenbosch; and St Andrew’s College, Grahamstown (including their identified partner schools, which are listed here).

  • Zimbabwe: 2

Duration: Any full-time postgraduate degree, including the BA with senior status over a two-year period, is open to Rhodes Scholars at the University of Oxford.

For individuals who follow a recognized path to the DPhil, the Scholarship may be extended for a third year at the Trustees’ discretion. Only in the second year of the Scholarship are the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and Masters of Financial Economics (MFE) programs admissible.

Subject to good academic achievement and behavior, the Scholarship has a basic two-year term.

How to Apply

Curriculum vitae/resumé or list of major activities; evidence of academic record or transcript (complete or in progress) for undergraduate degree and any postgraduate study; personal statement or essay (which, crucially, should include a clear statement of what the applicant wishes to study at Oxford and why);

• Proof of age, such as a passport or birth certificate;

• English language ability (if English is not the first language spoken);

• Photograph

• List of referees (often many are needed) who can vouch for the applicant’s moral integrity and intellectual ability, as well as his or her academic, personal, extracurricular, and leadership accomplishments (and who should never include family members)
