the data specialist will play the role of collecting, harvesting and sampling data which the organization will use for sustainable development.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head of HDRO Digital, Data, and Knowledge Management, and in collaboration with HDRO research and statistics teams, the Data Management Specialist will provide support to HDRO by managing both structured and unstructured data.

They will also maintain HDRO’s digital ecosystem and engage in the creation of interactive data visualizations and visual storytelling through the use of data.

Additionally, the Specialist will establish connections with technology and data units within UNDP and external organizations, including the private sector and academia, to enhance HDRO’s data resources with traditional and frontier data.

Manage HDRO’s Data Resources

  •  Oversee the administration and enhancement of HDRO databases.

  •  Format datasets and regularly update HDRO’s Data Center databases, interfaces, and links to ensure accuracy and reliability.

  •  Ensure uninterrupted operation of HDRO’s Data API by proactively maintaining and managing it.

  •  Take charge of updating and managing HDRO’s data exploration tool, making it an effective resource for the team.

  •  Collaborate with service providers to manage virtual machine accounts efficiently, ensuring seamless performance

Contribute with Data Visualizations

  •  Produce data visualizations and dashboards for HDRO’s knowledge products and website using tools like D3+React, Power BI, Tableau, or others.

  •  Maintain an internal database of source data and publish it on the HDRO website in standard formats.

  •  Ensure data accuracy and visual consistency for knowledge products through quality control efforts.

  •  Stay updated on the latest data visualization tools and standards, and propose relevant solutions.

  •  Contribute to discussions on various aspects of HDR preparation, including integrating new technologies and data.

  •  Collaborate with UN organizations, the private sector, and research institutes to apply innovative technologies and data for development.

  •  Perform assigned tasks as needed.

Desired skills in addition to the competencies

  •  Experience in data visualization applications including Tableau, Flourish, Adobe Creative Suite, is desirable

  •  Ability to communicate complex, abstract concepts using both visual, and written language.

  •  Knowledge and experience in using data science frameworks. Analytics and coding skills .

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  •  Advanced university degree (Master´s degree or equivalent in computer science, data science or a related field is required

  •  A first-level university degree (Bachelor´s degree) in computer science, data science or a related field in combination with additional 2 years of qualifying .

  • Experience will be given due consideration in lieu of Master´s degree.

Experience

  •  Minimum 5 years (with Master´s degree) or 7 years (with Bachelor´s degree) of experience in data management of structured and unstructured datasets, digital data analytics, or related discipline is required.

Required skills

  •  Strong data data management skills (including Structured Query Language (SQL) with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of data with attention to detail and accuracy.

  •  Experience with REACT, D3JS, Content Management Systems

  •  Excellent organizational and self-management skills.

  •  Effective team player demonstrating commitment to UNDP values and displays sensitivity and adaptability.

  •  Good communication and inter-personal skills.

Language

  •  Fluency in English is required.

  •  Working knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
