Murder-Accused Blogger Musa Khawula Arrested
Controversial social media entertainment commentator Musa Khawula was arrested at the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court in the Western Cape on Tuesday, 9 July. The arrest occurred while Khawula was appearing for his ongoing murder trial.
Khawula faces a murder charge for the fatal stabbing of his ex-boyfriend, Wandile Khambule, in March 2022 in Vredenburg.
Arrest Details
According to reports from Sunday World, a sheriff of the court informed the magistrate about a warrant for Khawula’s arrest related to a civil case in Gauteng after his court appearance. Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Western Cape branch, confirmed Khawula’s arrest. His murder case has been postponed to 7 August 2024 for judicial review.
Civil Case Background
The civil case against Khawula stems from allegations he made against Nozuko Mbalula, wife of ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, and her business partner, Michelle Perrow. Khawula accused them of obtaining dubious government tenders, implicating them in a R150 million fraud and corruption scandal in his posts on X (formerly Twitter) dated 8 May.
On 28 May, Judge Nicolene Janse van Nieuwenhuizen declared Khawula’s allegations unlawful, ordering him to retract his statements and delete the posts within 48 hours. Khawula was also interdicted from conducting interviews or posting statements implying fraud and corruption involving Nozuko and Perrow. Additionally, he was ordered to pay R1 million in damages to both parties.
Murder Case Details
In March 2022, Sweetness Jaftha, the girlfriend of the late Khambule, recounted the murder incident. She alleged that Khawula arrived at her Vredenburg house demanding to see Khambule. When Khambule refused to engage with Khawula, Jaftha suggested they speak outside to avoid disturbing others in the house.
Jaftha described witnessing Khawula chasing Khambule with a large knife and stabbing him. Khambule fell in front of her brother’s bakkie after being stabbed in the chest and back. Despite attempts to intervene, Khawula continued the assault until bystanders screamed, “Don’t stab him.”
In a TikTok video last year, Khawula confessed to stabbing Khambule, who was a photographer. He claimed he acted in self-defense during the altercation.
Musa Khawula’s legal troubles, both criminal and civil, continue to unfold, with significant public and media attention on the outcomes of these serious allegations.
