Step aside Lerato Kganyago! Man hires FNB Stadium for proposal

A South African man recently made headlines by pulling off a grand romantic gesture for his partner that could rival Lerato Kganyago’s lavish Valentine’s Day surprise. How did he do it? By renting out none other than the iconic FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City.

The spectacle was captured on social media, where clips of the elaborate proposal were shared for all to see. Picture this: the lucky woman, Ntombifuthi Sibeko, was treated like royalty as she was serenaded by her fiancé on the stadium grounds.

The scene was set with a VIP dinner for two, complete with a table adorned with red rose petals and candles, all placed under a heart-shaped arch.

Adding to the ambiance, a jazz band provided the soundtrack while a photographer and videographer immortalized the moment. Dressed in traditional Zulu attire, the man then took a knee and popped the question, with a sign flashing the words “Will you marry me, Ntombi?” over the couple.

Ntombi herself couldn’t contain her excitement, captioning the clip with gratitude for her partner’s extraordinary gesture. South Africans, however, were left stunned by the sheer opulence of the event, comparing it to Lerato Kganyago’s previous stadium rendezvous.

Comments flooded in, with many questioning the cost of such a grand gesture in today’s economy. The FNB Stadium, boasting a capacity of 90,000, holds significance as the site of Nelson Mandela’s first address after his release from prison in 1990. Originally reconstructed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup at a cost of R3.3 billion, the venue has since hosted various sports events and concerts.

In 2017, local musician Cassper Nyovest made history by becoming the first South African artist to fill the stadium to capacity with his concert, which reportedly cost R15 million to hire. Lerato Kganyago herself experienced a similar extravagant surprise when her husband booked the entire stadium for a Valentine’s Day celebration in 2021, featuring a private chef and a performance by Zonke Dikana.

These extravagant displays of affection certainly make for memorable moments, raising eyebrows and sparking admiration in equal measure. Whether it’s a stadium proposal or a Valentine’s Day extravaganza, one thing’s for sure – love knows no bounds when it comes to grand gestures in South Africa.
